Getting to Heidelberg

Arrival days are Tuesday and Wednesday, 30 and 31 July. We strongly recommend arriving on July 30. If you arrive after 10 p.m. on one of these days, you will not be able to reach us at the office and will have to find alternative accommodation for the first night (for example Heidelberg Youth Hostel or Steffis Hostel or airbnb).

By air:

Heidelberg is located in the Rhein-Neckar region, about 90 km south of Frankfurt (Main). The nearest international airports are Frankfurt/Main Airport, Stuttgart Airport and Hahn Airport.

From Frankfurt International Airport:

The train ride from Frankfurt to Heidelberg takes about 1 - 1.5 hours and may involve changing trains either at the main station in Frankfurt or in Mannheim. A one-way ticket costs about € 28.

It is also possible to take the Lufthansa Airport Shuttle from Frankfurt International Airport to Heidelberg. Vans run between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. from the Frankfurt Airport pick-up location. Please remember to make a reservation for the airport shuttle at least 3 days in advance and bring the ticket for your reservation with you. The price of a one-way ticket to Heidelberg is about € 32, early booking discounts may be available. The shuttle terminates at the rear entrance of the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Heidelberg. From there, you can either take a taxi to the building “Neue Universität” (Universitätsplatz/University Square) or walk to nearby Bismarckplatz and take bus #31 or #32 (direction: Universitätsplatz/University Square). A ticket will cost € 2.10 (so called Stadttarif HD, Kurzstrecken-Ticket).

You can also book a TLS airport shuttle taxi to Heidelberg. A staff member of TLS will pick you up at the Frankfurt Airport’s Meeting Point when you arrive and take you directly to the Summer School office. The TLS shuttle service has to be booked at least three days beforehand, and a one-way ticket costs about € 145. At night there is a surcharge of € 25. In the case of shared transportation, you must arrive at the meeting point at a fixed departure time, the trip costs € 85 per person. Collective transportation is only available during the day.

From Stuttgart Airport:

From Stuttgart Airport to Heidelberg, the train takes approximately 1.5 - 2 hours and involves changing trains, usually at Stuttgart main station. A one-way tickets costs about € 29. Take bus #32 from Heidelberg main station to Universitätsplatz/University Square. The large white building at University Square is “Neue Universität” where the Summer School Office is located. The bus ticket is € 3.20 (so called Stadttarif HD, Einzel-Ticket).

From Frankfurt Hahn Airport:

There is a regular shuttle bus service from Frankfurt Hahn airport to Frankfurt City Center via Mainz and Frankfurt Airport. The price of a one-way ticket to Mannheim varies depending on the service, time of booking etc. Direct trains run from both Mainz and Frankfurt main station to Heidelberg main station. Take bus #32 from Heidelberg main station to Universitätsplatz/University Square. The large white building at University Square is “Neue Universität” where the Summer School Office is located. The bus ticket is € 3.20 (so called Stadttarif HD, Einzel-Ticket).

By train:

Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof/Heidelberg main station is a stop for both national and international connections. Information on train schedules and fares is available at: www.bahn.de. Take bus #32 from Heidelberg main station to Universitätsplatz/University Square. The large white building at University Square is “Neue Universität” where the Summer School Office is located. The bus ticket is € 3.20 (so called Stadttarif HD, Einzel-Ticket).

By car:

Heidelberg can be approached from the A5, A6, A7, and A656 motorways. Please note that parking space in the city center is limited and usually not free.

By bus:

There has been a growing number of national intercity busses (Fernbus) and international bus lines. Find bus connections online. Most international bus lines stop 300 meters from Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof (main station) (Alte Eppelheimer Straße/Emil-Maier-Straße). Walk to the bus stop “Hauptbahnhof (Ost)” and take bus #32 to Universitätsplatz/University Square. The bus ticket is € 3.00 (so called Stadttarif HD).

 

Arrival in Heidelberg

Information regarding address and site plan of the Summer School office as well as accommodation bureau etc. will be sent to you in our confirmation letter.

Participants are advised to wait until they have received their class placement before purchasing a course book.

The workshops will be presented in the afternoon of the first day of the course (Thursday, August 1).

Courses will start on Friday, August 2.

 

Please Note

Group registration is not possible.

The university regrets that it cannot offer any scholarships for the above courses, and nor can it arrange paid employment for participants.

No parking facilities are provided.

Computer use and internet access is possible in most university buildings and in internet-cafés. In your accommodation there may not be WLAN but LAN, so please make sure to bring the equipment for using LAN (cable, adapter etc.).

 

IMPORTANT: Participants must arrange their own health cover prior to arrival. The Summer School cannot be held responsible for any medical costs.

Participants requiring a visa must be sure to apply to representatives of the German consular in good time. We will ask for your passport number upon registration. This will be used to issue a letter to the German Embassy. It will be provided to you so you can use it for your visa application.
